Needs to find out his residency/citizenship status. He was brought up thinking he was a citizen. His parents won't give him any papers (birth certificate, etc.) After leaving home his mom mentioned that he would be illegal in a few months. Has soc security card with "valid for work only with INS authorization" issued in North Carolina. He can't afford an immigration attorney.

If he has a SS card with that restriction, then he is definitely not a citizen or LPR with a green card. INS has been replaced by USCIS and ICE, so the card is old. His parents probably came here on nonimmigrant visas that may have expired, and they are the only people who can tell your friend what his legal status is or was.

He is in the US illegally Time for him to go home if he leave before he is 18.5 he will not get a 10 year ban his parents are probably illegal as well he should tell them he is going to report all of them
