He wants to visit his mother in Russia, but is waiting on his greencard? If he were not married to a United states citizen, would he be able to get a green card? How long can you stay in US with a work visa? Just looking out for my sister..This guy is really odd?

If he wasn't married to an american citizen then he wouldn't get the green card. the work visa depends...(whether he renews it and what not) And if he seems odd then you do have a right to be suspicious and look after your sister. If he turns out to be a good guy, don't hide the fact that you doubted him because you are only trying to look out for your sister.

I always say to follow your heart. I once had a real bad feeling about this guy that my cousin was dating. He made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Turns out he was engaged to be married to another woman and my cousin had to dump him like the jerk he was. If he is married to your sister and she is a citizen then they have a certain time period to stay married before he can be a citizen. The INS frowns on marriage for citizenship only. Time will tell on this guy. In the mean time make sure you are there to support your sister for the good and bad times she may need a shoulder to cry on one day!

it's actually a common thing for foreigners to come to the US, marry a citizen to get a green card, then get a divorce some years later. Oftentimes these people will meet online. My friend almost fell victim to one but thankfully his family was alert to what she was doing. Then again, some people truly and honestly fall in love despite borders. If your gut says he's being suspicious you should take a look into things. Express your concern to your sister (but also that you just want her to be happy).

It used to be that there was a "requirement" to remain married for 4 years. Not sure if that's still the case. If they split before the 4 years, she will be financially responsible for his support, if he cannot support himself. This is all old info. I was was in a similar marriage. Look into it. I know several requirements have changed since I was first married. Good luck

No, he probably wouldn't be getting a green card without that marriage and certainly not any time soon. Marriage cuts years off the wait. You can stay in the US on a work visa as long as it is current. The company can usually renew it over and over.

If he is "waiting for his green card" as the result of an application for adjustment of status, he would need to apply for and receive an advanced parole form before he leaves the U.S. unless his work visa is either an H-1B or and L-1. If he was not married to a U.S. citizen, someone else would have to petition for him, e.g., an organization or business or some other immediate relative, e.g., a parent. An alien can stay in the U.S. for the validity period of the petition that was used to obtain a work visa. Some petitions are valid for 3 years, some for 12 months, it depends on the classification. There is nothing odd about a foreigner marrying a U.S. citizen for the purpose of obtaining a green card. Sometimes the marriage is based upon true affection for one another.
