ConfuciousMouse say: That is like asking how safe it is to live in America. All depends on where you live. There are safe and unsafe places, just as here in the States. If you live in a small village somewhere in the country, obviously you will be okay. If you live in Moscow, you may want to do some more homework.

I don't think it is honestly safe anywhere in Russia. They had a theater in their capital city get attacked by a big group of Chechen terrorists, then their own police killed more of the civilians on accident then the terrorists did. But then again then you could argue that you're not safe anywhere in the world. I say go, even if there are a bunch of vodka guzzling thugs and bad drivers.

I spent one year in Russia, their police is terrible and that's because their government just don't have enough money. Stay in a large city and stay in crowds. I hope your not black, you think we have racist people here, you don't know nothing till you go to Russia. They are the most racist people I have ever seen, and the police will be very little help, if any.

Russia is like many other countries in the world. It is generally safe but there are always exceptions. The police are really corrupt. They can stop you while you're driving and give you a ticket just because they need some money, and the worst is you can easily bribe them (that's usually what they want). This also happens in other countries (ex-USSR ones), like Armenia, so be careful about that. America projected the negative image of Russia being full of crime, but precautions should be taken everywhere in the world, not only in Russia. Good luck and have a safe trip :) !

If you're anything but white, pale, don't move there. Caucasian won't work either. Check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0fUuOtyaVo (it's not mine, it has over 150k views, I'm not trolling). I'd suggest you to bring some weapon with you, or buy it there, and try to avoid skinheads. Good luck!

Dear friend, Maniacs, skinheads, sick people etc are absolutely everywhere and of course you can find them in Russia, too. America, for example, is also not as safe as many think... But if you don't try to get into troubles then everything is normally safe, no need to be scared. Crimes and murders happen in all big and even small cities every day (if not every hour or minute). Some ladies, for example, wear extremely short skirts and forget to wear underwear and then they wonder, why do men follow them and try to rape?! Because it's very important to suit yourself and not to mix up big city or any city with the beach. Dress normally, behave normally (not too friendly neither rude), do not walk alone in nights or evenings, do not go to unknown places alone and everything will be alright then, no worries. Will you come as a tourist?! So be a tourist then, visit places, enjoy the views, learn about Russian culture (original one) and all the best to you! I hope, you will really enjoy your trip! Good luck! Thank you!

To be honest with you, who hasn't heard of stories how black people (and Asians, especially Chinese) are attacked in daylight on the streets in Russia? Most of hooligans and skinheads live in big cities. So, it's not like each and every Russian will try to haunt you down, there's no need to exaggerate, but there's still a possibility that you may face racism.
