The absolute most important thing to study -- next to language of course -- is the history and culture of your host country. You should understand their point of view, their way of thinking, what informs their customs and manners. Not only will it make them appreciate you as a foreign guest in their country, but it will make your time there much more rich and enjoyable.

If you want to live and work in Russia you should have an appropriate RUSSIAN education because it will be hard to get a good job with a foreign certification. So I strongly recommend you to consider studying in Russia in a college or university for international students - it is a good way to acquire language skills and knowledge about the country as well. i don't agree that you have to get Russian education to work in Russia. you see, here in Russia higher education is not very good. and everybody realizes it. so many Russian young people try to get their higher education abroad (in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia etc) or at least to have practical training there - but it all depends on money, so not many can afford it. the situation with economical and financial education is really bad here, so foreign degrees are most appreciated among top managers, financial analysts etc. to you can try it on. about Russian culture and mentality - there is one very famous Russian poetry, below is some variants of its translation: You will not grasp her with your mind Or cover with a common label, For Russia is one of a kind – Believe in her, if you are able... * * * Russia cannot be understood with the mind alone, No ordinary yardstick can span her greatness: She stands alone, unique – In Russia, one can only believe. * * * You can't understand Russia with your brain, You can't measure it with the standard instruments: She has a particular status – In Russia you can only believe. * * * Russia cannot be understood with the mind Or measured with a standard/common yardstick, She has a peculiar character – In Russia, one can only believe. * * * Russia is understood not by the mind, Nor by a common rule.
