They had many houses/palaces all over Russia, but the most famous is probably the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, which was famously stormed during the events of the Russian revolution. At the time their main residence was actually Alexander palace in Tsarskoe Selo.

The Romanov's lived in many locations - they had palaces in many locations. Their main residence was the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Other residences include Peterhof - Peter's "way-station" when coming and going from Europe through the harbor at Kronstadt. There was also the Alexander Palace and the Catherine Palaces - both in Tsarskoye Selo. The Romanovs had moved their residence to the Alexander Palace in 1905, because it was far more secure. The Winter Palace proved to be difficult to defend and had been stormed by revolutionaries on multiple occasions. Nicolas II had been away fighting the war, but when he heard his family was ill with the measles, he returned to Petrograd. On March 22, 1917 he and his family were placed under house arrest in the Alexander palace. On April 30, 1918 they were moved to the Ipatiev House - a merchant's house in Yekaterinburg. On July 17, 1918, the family was murdered by the Bolshevik guards.
