Was it possible for a family from Russia to immigrate to the US during the 1980s

Was it possible for a family from Russia to immigrate to the US during the 1980s?
I want to write a short story about a family (2 parents and 1 child) who are Russian and live in Russia, and immigrate to America from Russia. The story is set in the mid-late 1980s. Would it be possible for a family to do this, and if so, how? Would they have to do it illegally? Any answers appreciated, the more info the better. Thanks!

Yes, but it was very, very difficult. They would need an exit visa and often the Communist Party would calculate the cost of their education in the USSR and demand payment of an enormous sum of money to get the exit stamp. If they had a wealthy sponsor in the West they could buy their way out. You can Google search for a group referred to as "Refuseniks." They were Russian Jews who made themselves a pain in the Soviet's *** during the 60's, 70's, and 80's. The Israelis ransomed many of them out of the USSR. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Human_Rights/refuseniks.html
