Russia is not an easy place to move into because of strong nationalism/chavinism and almost hopeless bureacracy. However, over centuries, many foreigners have settled there, nonetheless. Being married to a local and having money will help. If you are poor though and not married to a local, it will be an almost impossible proposition. However, it is easier to spend monhs and months there as a visitor, then go out and come back. People have been doing it for years. It is called PT- perpetual traveler/permanent tourist.

I can also give you some advice since I was there for 1 week this past summer and I lived in an apartment. And the one thing you really want to have on hand is their currency and depending on where you want to live at either in one of the big cities Moscow or St. Petersburg or one of the smaller cities away from Moscow. You will have to make sure you have enough money to provide for yourself for 1 or more months depending how long you decide to stay, and a common basic knowledge of their language. One thing you want to really start with is the cyrillic alphabet that way you can translate the letters on signs. Even though in Moscow an St. Pete they can speak some English. It's better to get some language skills. What other advice can I give you is that when you go shopping for food make sure you check the expiration date cause I had bought Nestle chocolate ice cream when I was there an didn't look at the date on it an it was 2 months old and I got sick from it, yes I am sure they sell expired food in some stores, and don't drink the water from tap, as it was suggested to me that I bought bottle water. And to get around likely use taxi or trolley bus.

I don't. I did already my share. 50 years of hard labor with no parole. I always like to come back as a tourist but.
