No they didn't. Only a few elites who reaped what others sowed were happy. Anybody who showed even a little dissent was either killed or sent to a prison work camp. This includes ordinary citizens as well as government officials who could maybe be perceived as a threat. All in all not a good place to be. Many Communist sympathizers went to the Soviet Union only to find out that maybe they didn't like communism anymore.

at first, they loved it. they were happy to finally be getting everything that they had wanted for such a long time. even people who had not been bolsheviks before the revolution swarmed to lenin's side. of course, there was lots of opposition too, but this shrank as the tide of the civil war turned. later, they hated it. the civil war and war communism (the economic policy that got them through it) had ravaging effects on the economy. the later stages of the civil war were marked by people fleeing cities and all out rebellions in previously loyal areas. after that, they loved it again. they knew only about the good things stalin was doing, and they were very proud to be citizens of the only major power whose economy was growing during the great depression. they also considered themselves to be the only country (except mongolia, who was also communist) that was not dominated by economic slavery. as time went on, they began to love it less and less, until today only a little over half the population who can remember the ussr miss it.
