well, being from a texas hick town, liking houston, dallas and san antonio to a degree, i find a russian town of 50-100 thousand best, you can walk ANYWHERE, since it is as small as a central texas hick town. you meet hundreds, literally of pedestrians on a kilometer stroll. even many walk in 30 below temperature! all neighborhoods have food shops, bookstores, drug stores, cosmetic stores, record stores, etc and are spaced out about 5 blocks apart, more or less. like a clump of such businesses here, five blocks north and east, another clump. (to MY south and west happens to be a huge park). but the town plat would be dotted with such places.

I would choose Ufa!! Population a little bit more than 1mln people.Very green during the summer. It is cold there during the winter thou. People are awsome. The life of this city is slow and calm.I love it.It is not very expencive to live there.

MOSKVAAAAAAA! Greatest city in the world and its been proven by science. Seriously though, its got awesome nightlife, people are fashionable, sport teams are in abundance, transport is good, restaurants are heaps good and the city has a mix of ultra rich and regular Russians. Moscow is a melting pot, and even though it has a western Euro feel, it is in many ways Russian thus making it a great city. However there are some cons; - People can't drive/can't be bothered driving properly thus making driving in Moscow a dangerous experience - Its expensive. It has been voted as the World's most expensive city three years in a row and is ahead of Paris and New York. However, you do get what you pay for.

That all depends on what you want. In St. Petersburg there is a lot of tourism, and you will have to deal with white nights as well as a colder climate. Moscow has some of the same characteristics, but is further south. Most of the cities nowadays have a decent amount of shops and the like, I visited Yaroslavl on my trip (family) and I wouldn't have minded living there. Driving is a new mindset. The idea seems to be to get the vehicle into a situation where you either hit them, or you MUST let them go by just to get traffic moving again. It can get hairy quick!
