What is it like to live in Russia

What is it like to live in Russia?
I have always been fascinated with Russian literature, history, and music, and I am considering moving to Russia for a short period of time. Could anyone tell me what life is like in Russia? Thanks. Sorry, I didn't mean completely moving; I meant that I wanted to buy like a second home/vacation home to live there during my leisure time.

What kind of job do you have? Are you going to school? You can't just up and go to Russia, it's a pretty long process. Do you speak the language?

Err well in Moscow is like living in New York or London. Just a different language and different culture. But not a major diff!

Sorry with my English, it's a foreign language to me. The life conditions greatly depend on which part of country you visit. I can divide Russia in 6 parts: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Central Russia, North and East, Caucasus (muslim part), South. 1. Moscow is a big city and in my opinion it doesn't suit for leisure time spending. Traffic jams, fuss, all this is very annoying. All the more, prices of real estate are very high. 2. St. Petersburg. I was there once and i loved it. It's a very nice city and the cultural center of the country. If Moscow looks like New-York, St. Pete is more European. Moscow and St. Petersburg are biggest cities of Russia. Safety is ok. I've lived in Moscow for 20 years and had no troubles concerning crime or police. But, especially in Moscow, there's a mad way of driving and a totally corrupted road police. Photos of these cities you can easily find in internet. 3. Central Russia. The golden ring.In substance Russia itself. I had a detached duty to Novgorod this summer, and some vacations in Suzdal earlier, it was great. Definitly my choise. This part is characterised by a great deal of churches, ancient kremlins, other historical objects. Nice nature. I remember my visits there for such funs as fishing, hunting, BBQ, doing the sights etc. People are kind. Some grassroots photos (the author is a city designer so some photos can seem strange): Novgorod: http://tema.ru/travel/veliky-novgorod/ Suzdal: http://tema.ru/travel/suzdal2/ By the way, if you know the language, here are grassroots photos of almost each Russian city: http://tema.ru/travel/. 4. North and East. Firs of all I mean such cities as Murmansk, Novosibirsk and so on. Unfortunately, I haven't been there. Some places, I think, are pretty good to be visited (Baikal, Altai, Kamchatka... : http://englishrussia.com/?p=2339, http://englishrussia.com/?p=2131) but towns are not very pleasant in my opinion. 5. Caucasus. People are mainly muslims, another world. Here are very interesting places - Derbent, Mnt. Elborus. There have been 4 wars in last 20 years and staying there is not safe. http://tema.ru/travel/dagestan-2/ 6. West Caucasus. Black sea coast. Nice place. There are still many muslims in extreme south, but in distinction from east part it's safe enough there. http://englishrussia.com/?p=1873 http://tema.ru/travel/sochi/.

buying a vacation home there would not make much sense. Its too big to just have a home somewhere, better to go around and visit the many cool areas in your leisure time. Oh, and not much reason to be there from October till March!
